Local Produce

Summertime is a perfect time to take advantage of fresh, local produce! Why shop for trucked-in produce from parts unknown at the grocery store when you have a chance to buy and support local farmers. Possible health benefits aside, there’s just something special about eating local. And what’s summer without a fresh-from-the-garden tomato sandwich?

To fulfill your local produce needs, there are local Farmer’s Markets around the county, and the Chestertown Farmer’s & Artisan Market is a wonderful one to visit. It is open on Saturdays from 8am – noon and you can find a great variety of local artisans and farmers selling produce, baked goods and even enjoy some wine tastings!

Now if you find that you can’t make it on Saturday mornings, some of our smaller markets, such as Chestertown Natural Foods in downtown Chestertown and Cross Street Market in Galena also provide local and organic produce and are a great place to check out. Additionally, the county has several local produce stands where you can pick up daily essentials, and their prices are just great! You might want to try some different stands while you’re out and about this summer, you may just find your favorite vendor..or perhaps more than one.

The next time you’re out running errands, stop by your local produce stand for some fresh fruits & veggies…you’ll be so glad you did!

Outdoor Fitness on the Shore

When moving to the shore, the first thing that comes to mind is the beautiful scenery, and spending time outside is something you’ll truly enjoy! Water sports are a natural focus for the area, but there are also plenty of opportunities for land based activities.

We have local team sports, running clubs, cycling groups, races and more! From parks to trails, or just lovely walks in our historic downtown, your options are only exceeded by your willingness to explore.

A great place to start in downtown Chestertown is the Wayne Gilchrest trail, a a project from the Rails to Trails Conservancy, an organization that converts abandoned railroad tracks into fitness trails across the country. This 1.2 mile paved trail provides a protected pathway in downtown Chestertown that is perfect for walking your dog, heading out on a run, or going for a nice bike ride!

Depending on how far you like to run or ride, this can be either just right, or a great start to a longer journey! If you’re looking for a longer adventure, I still recommend making this trail at least part of your route.
